Dr Helena Aegerter is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Internal Medicine and Paediatrics at Ghent University and the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research. Her research centres on the immunological mechanisms underlying asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis, with a particular focus on mucus biology and type 2 inflammation.
Dr Aegerter's work has contributed to understanding the role of protein crystals, such as Charcot–Leyden crystals and Ym1, in driving type 2 immune responses in asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis. She has also explored the biology of lung macrophages in health and disease, providing insights into their roles in maintaining lung homeostasis and contributing to disease pathology. In addition to her research, Dr Aegerter has been involved in translational studies aiming to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets for airway diseases.
